Some of you may know that I was notified this past summer that I had to report for jury duty.... to the courthouse in Auburn, pictured above. This is usually a non-event for me, as I never get on a jury. Part of this is due to my ten years as a Marine Corps Officer and then fifteen more as an Army Officer, I assume. And part of it is related to my doctorate in criminal justice. They worry, during the voir dire process, that I would influence the jury (they are correct, I probably would try). However, during the last summons, I was the last person to be considered before a peremptory challenge by the prosecutor ended my jury duty. I was always curious about the fate of the defendant. He claimed that the DUI he was charged with was the result of taking Ambien and sleepwalking, or DUI while asleep. A novel defense, but I ran into my neighbor Larry, the presiding judge, and asked him the outcome. He remembered the case. Guilty as charged!
