To Spank or Not to Spank, That Is The Question?
Had a discussion on the telephone this morning with Eric, my oldest son. He was describing some of Andrew's latest behavior, which is about what you can expect from a two-plus year old, sometimes not good. I am not a big fan of spanking, and if you look at the research, and I have, you can easily find support for any position. I do know that spanking is effective in stopping behavior and that is what it should be used for in most cases. A parent does not need to spank when there is an accident. Ever. A parent should only resort to spanking when there is behavior that could hurt the child or the child is hurting another. If your child tries to dart across the street, that might be a good time for a swat. Or if the child is punching out his sibling, again, probably a good idea. And you should not spank when angry. Almost eighty percent of all parents in North America support the notion, and I believe most of the masses have some common sense, so think about it and spank if you need to do so.

Tim, we were spanked, and see how well we all turned out!
I had a discussion with a friend once. She said that most of the men in prison were there because they had been spanked as a child. I told her that was crazy, there is a big difference between abuse and spanking with love!
I say, spank away. I wish the parents that took their brats to Walmart would agree!
I think a good rule is to spank for willful disobedience, not accidents or forgetfulness. Also Kenny's Mamaw always said to never spank a child in anger or to punish them by not letting them do something that you had already promised them they could do.
