Heat Wave

Yes, there is one just not here. Wichita Falls made the national news shows today as a result of this:

WICHITA FALLS — Wichita Falls broke another record Tuesday — one most Wichitans would likely prefer left unbroken.

The city has registered its highest number of days in a calendar year in which the temperature was 100 degrees or more — in history. The official thermometer passed the 100 degree mark by noon Tuesday, meaning the city has had 80 days so far at or above 100 degrees in 2011. This broke the record of 79 days set in 1980, which had stood for 31 years.

This was the second record the city broke within a week. Wichita Falls had the greatest number of consecutive days of 100-degrees or higher between June 22 -Aug. 12 this year — 52 days. That eclipsed the old record of 42 days set in 1980.

This year will also hold the dubious honor of having the greatest number of days at or above 105 degrees — 49 so far, compared to the old record of 41 in 1980.
