So we visited FranK and Barbara in their home this week. They live in South Lake Tahoe on Horace Greeley. While there, Frank recounted the events of last summer having to do with bears. It seems that Frank's nephews were visiting. They decided to go out. Frank and Barbara and the dog Oliver went to bed. The nephews came home just in time to see a bear going through the open living room window. They wanted to call Frank and Barbara but only had their cell phone numbers, and they could see the cell phones in the living room. The nephews were afraid to call those phones as Frank or Barbara could answer the phones and run into the bear. They called Frank's brother and got the home number which rang in their bedroom. Frank answered. The nephew said, "Do you know there is a bear in your living room?" Frank said, no, but if you hum a few bars I maybe could sing it." They finally convinced him they were serious and together they scared off the bear. It was very polite. It only took two steaks thawing on the top shelf of the fridge. And it shut the door. Today, we now have our own bear story. Rhonda and I were riding on a bike trail next to the road by Camp Richardson. A lady stopped and asked Rhonda if she saw the bear. Rhonda started to say no, then...saw a rather large black bear vaulting the fence, crossing the road and coming straight for her. She screamed and began pedaling quickly. Rhonda said it "looked her in the eye" and it was much too close for comfort. No need for an EKG, her heart is fine. We were later driving and saw a brown bear who was not too eager to be photographed.
